Welcome

This website, launched in October 2009, is where you can follow and participate in the much-anticipated revision of the AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard (AA1000SES). The AA1000SES originally published in 2005 as an exposure draft, is the first international standard for stakeholder engagement and the revision process aims to make the next edition more accessible, practical and strategically applicable, demonstrating the value of robust engagement and articulating how this can be achieved. Your participation will help establish a new international benchmark.

Anyone can view the standard, but you need to be registered to comment or edit the standard, click the link at the top of the page to register. You will receive an email confirmation when your account has been activated.
To view, edit or comment on the current version of the AA1000SES click on the appropriate links on the left hand side of this page.

The recommendations from the workshop held on 20 November in Athens, Greece, in partnership with the Institute of Social Innovation and E&Y Greece, are now available for download. The recommendations from this workshop provide a brief overview of what the primary focus of the AA1000SES should be; areas where specific guidance is needed; some of the challenges associated with stakeholder engagement in addition to other standards the AA1000SES needs to be aligned with and how this should be done.

Some of the recommendations in relation to the AA1000SES and gaps in the market the new standard should try to fill was for there to be a link between the methodology and best practices cases. Participants agreed that a methodology should include guidelines, back up support and case studies. There was a high degree of consensus on this point with participants, who particularly emphasized that the standards shouldn’t be overly complicated. Practitioners who do want to use the standards might understand a detailed, step by step approach but might be hard pressed to “sell it” to their management as it will be something too advanced and out of their league.
