The AA1000SES Consultation Workshop took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 27 January 2010. The ten participants were from large corporations, businesses and academic institutions.

As with the other global consultation workshops that have taken place, the workshop was split into two sessions. The first session was a wider discussion on the current state of stakeholder engagement, with the second session focusing on the issues which neeed to be addressed in the new edition of the standard.

There was broad consensus from participants that the focus of the new standard should be on an organisation as a whole, rather than solely targeted to the CSR department of an organisation. When asked about the scope the AA1000SES, here are some of the suggestions which came from the participants:

  • more assistance on how to develop a SE strategy
  • more on how to link engagement outcomes into internal decision making
  • should elaborate on measuring and evaluating effectiveness of SE       ‐ acceptable metrics of measurements
  • should first start from principles and include value and business case of SE (important to get buy in, change mindset)
  • should briefly highlight that implementation will differ according cultural contexts
  • should not make distinctions between large and small organizations (general not prescriptive)
  • addressing common problems – should come under guidance document, not in the standard.
  • consider adding case studies in a guidance document – may be more relevant and helpful to SMEs.
